The big news last week on the UK car front was that around a third of all vehicles fail their MOT each year – often for simple faults like bald or defective tyres.
However, by following these three simple steps you could prevent your tyres from letting your car down at its annual inspection:
1. Make sure they have the minimum legal tread depth of 1.6mm across three-quarters of the tyre. A quick guide to doing this is to insert a 20p coin into the groove at various points around the tyre. If the outer band of the coin is visible when inserted, then the tyre may not have sufficient depth and will probably need to be replaced before the test.
2. Check for cracks, lumps and bulges, which will indicate your tyre is damaged and potentially dangerous, if not replaced or repaired, it could cause a blow-out at high speed.
3. Ensure your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. It is always best to check your tyres when they are cold, so get carry out the check at your nearest garage.
If you think your tyres need replacing to avoid failing your MOT, remember that etyres operates a mobile tyre fitting service, so once you have placed your order, we come to you and fit them at a location of your choice – at home or work.
And because we don’t have expensive depots to run, our overheads are low and we pass the savings on to you in the form of lower prices – up to 40% cheaper than the leading high street depots.
