Winter is here and it is vital to make sure your tyres can handle the hazards it brings to the roads.
Here are three tips to help you keep your tyres in top condition so that they can cope with the harshest weather and road conditions of the year:
1. Give your tyres a visual inspection, look for cracks, bulges or any visible sign of damage. If the tyre is not repaired of replaced it could lead to a slow puncture or a blow out at high speeds
2. Make sure your tyres are inflated to the level recommended by your car manufacturer. You will find this in the vehicle manual or on a plate on the drivers side door jam. Again, this will give you optimum control over the handling of your vehicle.
3. Check the tread depth on your tyres to make sure they are safe and legal. The minimum legal limit is 1.6mm, but it is advisable to replace them before they reach this point. A simple guide to find out if they are above the legal limit is to insert a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of the tyre. If the outer band of the coin cannot be seen when inserted into the tread, then the tyres have adequate tread depth. If the outer band is visible, then the tyres may not have enough tread and you may need to change them.
