Check tyres and other tips to slash fuel bills by £310
Driver are being urged to check their tyres and carry out a few other basic, common-sense checks to help slash their fuel bills by £310.
Making sure tyres are properly inflated is one of the tips from oil company Shell after it published the findings of its “Smarter Drivers” study.
The survey closely monitored the journeys made by 11 two-car families from across the UK for six weeks, after inviting them to attend special training days.
Each family was shown how to drive more smoothly and efficiently by maintaining a constant speed, keeping tyres at the correct pressure and maintaining their cars.
Participants were given other tips including cutting excess weight from their cars, removing unused roof racks and altering travel patterns.
The average British family could shave £310 a year off its motoring bills by driving more carefully and by planning journeys more effectively, according to Shell.
It revealed that the Milnes family from Aberdeen managed to reduce fuel bills by 62 per cent, or the equivalent of saving £710 a year.
While the Holbrook family from Stockport achieved savings of 25 per cent, the equivalent of £280 a year.
