Check Tyres and Other Tips to Reduce Breakdown Risks
As credit-crunched vehicle owners struggle to reduce their motoring costs, cutting breakdown cover is becoming an increasingly popular option.
However, as millions of people hit the roads for the Christmas holidays it is wise to make sure your car and tyres are in tip-top condition to cut the risk of breaking down.
Regularly checking your tyres tread depth, pressure and making sure there are no signs of crack, bulges or other wear and tear – including the spare - is just one of the steps you can take to help prevent breakdowns.
Other measures include making sure the oil levels and other fluids, including anti-freeze are regularly topped up.
You should also ensure you have a torch, reflective triangle sign, high visibility jacket, first aid kit, jump leads and plenty of warm clothing in case the worst happens.
Never assume that you aren’t at risk of being stranded at the roadside, however reliable your car might seem.
According to research by consumer organisation Which?, for about one in six motorists, at least one journey a year will result in a breakdown.
