Caravan and motorhome owners are being urged to pay special attention to their tyres in the run up to the extra-long Golden Jubile Bank Holiday weekend.
For many, this will be the first opportunity to give their vehicles a good run out this year, which means their tyres need to be very closely scrutinised, according to TyreSafe, the UK’s leading tyre safety group.
Stuart Jackson, Chairman of TyreSafe, warned: “Caravan tyres are placed under a high level of stress, so it is essential that caravan owners inflate their tyres to the correct pressure and do not overload them.”
Caravan owners should ensure that loads are spread evenly around the caravan and as low down as possible to maximise the stability and safety of the car and caravan combination. This helps to avoid putting too much pressure on any one tyre.
Owners should also inspect the separate spare caravan wheel tyre, which should always be the same size, load index and speed rating to those already fitted to the caravan axle. The spare tyre and wheel assembly from the towing vehicle must not be used on the caravan, even in an emergency situation.
And since for some it is the the first time the vehicles have eased out onto the roads after months in storage or standling idle, it is vital that the tyres are checked for visible signs of damage.
