California Drops Proposed Bill to Declare Tyres Age
By Denna Bowman
A California Senate committee has pulled a proposed tyres aging bill from consideration because of a lack of votes needed to get it through.
The new law, which would have required tyre dealers to share tyres age information with customers, was pulled at the last minute before it was heard by the Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee.
A spokesman from the Rubber Manufacturers Association said the measure’s “trial lawyer sponsors” requested the bill be pulled because it appeared the committee would have defeated it.
The proposed legislation was strongly opposed by tyre dealers, the Tyre Industry Association and the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA).
It “had the patina of being a consumer information bill, but was called ‘a stealth candidate for enriching trial lawyers,” said Terry Leveille, president of TL & Associates, editor and publisher of the California Tyre Report.
“That opinion may have come about when the Consumer Attorneys of California was listed on the ’support’ side.”However, the bill is still eligible for future consideration through 2010 because it wasn’t put up for a Senate committee vote.”
The RMA said it would continue to monitor the legislation and similar measures that may come up.
