South African Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has signed a deal with Pirelli to act as the company’s spokesperson world-wide. Pistorius, who is sponsored by Pirelli, will feature in their future advertising campaigns. The South African, who runs on carbon fibre blades, holds the world record for the 100 metres, 200 metres and 400 metres. The Italian tyre specialists believe that Pistorius can fulfil the role in their promotional campaigns that was once successfully filled by Carl Lewis.
Mario Tronchetti Provera, of Pirelli, said, “Pistorius is an extraordinary person. We are happy to be able to give him our support. For Pirelli, he could represent our new Carl Lewis; his story witnesses to the fact that will, passion and technology can vanquish any obstacles, improving the lives of many.”
Pistorius said the deal is “another sign that barriers are in the eyes of the beholder.”
