Auto Express tests tread depth gauges for tyres
There is a really interesting review of tread depth gauges for tyres in Auto Express this week.
The team tested 10 top gauges which will help motorists ensure their tyres have the right tread depth - in the same way you can buy a gadget to check your air pressure.
There’s a choice of analogue and digital tread depth gauges on the market, with prices starting at under £5.
Auto Express selected five of each to find the best. They rated the RAC’s well priced Tyre Service Kit top of the analogues and their pick of the digital gauges is the Draper Expert.
The legal tread depth limit is 1.6mm across the central 75 per cent of the tyre – if a tyre fitted to your car is under 1.6mm, you can be fined £2,500 and given three penalty points. So if all four tyres are worn, you’ll be facing 12 points and a £10,000 punishment.
By checking regularly for uneven wear, you’re more likely to be alerted to problems like incorrect pressures, poor alignment or damage from kerbing or running over potholes.
