Auto Express has discovered a huge disparity – often relating to price – in the performance of 12 of Britain’s top-selling tyres, in its annual test.
The top car news weekly magazine put the biggest-selling 16 inch 205/55R16 found on some of the UKs most popular family models through their paces for its annual tyres test.
The report published this week stated: “There are dozens of makes, hundreds of patterns and a huge range of prices, with premium brands at the top end and budget imports at the bottom.
“And your choice could be the difference between life and death in an emergency.”
The brands tested included Bridgestone, Continental, Michelin, Pirelli, Hankook and Wanli and prices ranged from £89 down to £54 (Auto Express turned to etyres, the UKs leading internet tyres company, to provide the price chart).
They were checked for dry handling, wet handling and cornering, aquaplaning, dry and wet braking, rolling resistance, price and noise.
The Auto Express tests placed the Continental PremiumContact2 in the top slot as the best all-round tyre money can buy, billing it as a “superb all-rounder”.
While Chinese maker Wanli was way behind its rivals and the magazine described it as “long way off required standard”.
