Definition of Carbon Black

The rubber used in tyres is a complex compound of different chemicals and natural substances mixed together. Carbon black is used as a reinforcing agent.

Different types of carbon black will have different properties when mixed into a tyre compound. Depending on the particular compound used, manufacturers can increase a tyre’s wet performance, rolling resistance, dry performance etc. For wet performance and rolling resistance, carbon black is increasingly being replaced by other fillers such as silica.
